Not even sure that that's how a real Hammond swell pedal sounds (had the chance to play a real one only once many years ago, so.). Not sure if it's just a different "curve" or the tone is indeed different in a way that's not achievable with volume. But, when the pedal is at say 75% you hear a difference. That is to say, when the pedal is at 100% pressed, it won't make a difference whether you set it to "swell" or to "volume".

I did wonder the same and I found that the tone is affected let's say "from 0-99", but not 100, where it becomes the same as volume.
